Last night in our Level 1 Self Defense class, we worked on the defense against a Choke from the Side.
.
We worked on three Combatives that go with this defense:
1. Elbow #4 (Vertical Elbow Strike Backward Low)
2. Elbow #5 (Vertical Elbow Strike Backward)
3. Hammerfist to the Side
.
Elbows #4 and #5 are modified for this defense by delivering them sideways instead of backward.

I noticed the Elbow #4 Student Section video has not been uploaded to our Facebook page yet. It explains the difference between delivery the strike with speed vs. power.

Please note that when delivering this elbow to the side you would substitute a lean with the body instead of a pivot with the foot.

The Vertical Elbow Strike Backward Low (Elbow #4) can be delivered in two general ways. One version emphasizes speed. The other version emphasizes power. This video demonstrates the differences between the two versions and the pros and cons of each. Also, it will explain why you would use one version over the other depending on the circumstances in a fight or self-defense situation.
