#ThrowBackThursday from 4 years ago.

In the technical part of this Fight class we worked on several methods to gouge our opponent’s eyes during a fight.

We started the class by reviewing the defense against Bearhug from the Front with Arms Free – Leverage on the Neck (Level 2 technique). This defense involves using our thumbs for eye gouges to leverage our attacker’s neck.

Next we practiced Palming Heel Striking (Level 1) to push our opponent away while simultaneously inserting our fingers or thumbs into the eyes while pushing their face away.

The last technique we practiced was to clinch with our opponent using a Neck or Collar Tie-Up (Level 3) while using our opposite hand to insert our thumb into the opponent’s eye socket. It was explained that this technique should only be used when you feel your life is in danger due to the high chance you can permanently blind your attacker. However, there’s no such thing as “fighting dirty” when your life depends on it!

The beginning of this video shows myself and Tom sparring. I’m able to successfully simulate the Head Tie-Up/Eye Gouge technique during two exchanges. Notice that I use other combatives, especially lower body strikes, such as knees and kicks in conjunction with this eye gouge technique.

Thank you to my students who attended this Fight class! Please contact me if you want feedback on your sparring rounds.
